Armas por Navidad. I don't like mondays

Ocurre con bastante frecuencia que una canción, por su melodía, por su título, es francamente malinterpretada. Hoy mismo me he dado cuenta de que eso me ha ocurrido con I don't like mondays, de The Boomtown Rats. Una canción que siempre me ha gustado y que la tenía por "graciosa". La candidata ideal para animar cualquier lunes.

Sin más intención que la de compartir esta gran canción, me hago con la letra y la canto muy alegremente según voy leyendo.

Una terrorífica historia acontecida en 1979 es la que inspira esta canción.

Brenda Ann Spencer, una niña californiana de 16 años, pidió por Navidad una radio. Su padre pensó que era mejor idea regalarle un magnífico rifle semiautomático del calibre 22 con mira telescópica y 500 municiones.

El lunes 29 de enero, Brenda se levantó, se vistió, cogió su flamante arma, apuntó hacia la entrada del colegio que tenía frente a la ventana de su habitación y comenzó a disparar a todo al que allí se encontraba... durante 6 horas. Hirió a once niños y a un oficial de policía, y asesinó al director del colegio y al conserje.
Cuando por fin consiguieron dar con la francotiradora, un policía le preguntó "Dime por qué". La joven Brenda argumentó sus motivaciones:

“No me gustan los lunes. Solo lo hice para animarme el día. No tengo ninguna razón más, solo fue por divertirme. [...]. Vi a los niños como patos que andaban por una charca y un rebaño de vacas rodeándolos. Blancos fáciles"

Brenda fue condenada a 30 años de prisión, donde actualmente cumple pena.

Pero lo tremendo de la historia no queda aquí. Bob Geldof escribió la famosa canción inspirada en los hechos. Solo un mes después de los acontecimientos su desconocido grupo lanzó la canción. Inmediatamente fueron número uno en el Reino Unido. En Estados Unidos, sin embargo, fue censurada negando su promoción por motivos educativos.

La historia se repite sin cesar, y mientras haya armas por Navidad, nada cambiará.
